1987 McDonald’s Changeables Happy Meal Box

Those McDonald’s Changeables signs that I posted yesterday are definitely great pieces of cheap transforming robot toy artwork, but for something really fun take a look at this 1987 Changeables Happy Meal box. Flat, never used, and loaded with adorable artwork of the McDonald’s Changeables toys I’m now left with two serious questions:

  1. Do I hang the flattened box at the office or at home?
  2. Which side do I have showing once I get the flattened box framed?

There’s always the options of cutting the box and flattening it so that both sides show at once, but I don’t think that’s a good idea because it would destroy the box. I’m sure I’ll think of something.

  1. Incredible!
Believe it or not, I don’t think we had Happy Meals in Australia when these were released. We got them sometime in the early 90s, but prior to that the kid’s toys were sold on a basis of “$2 with any Big Mac purchase” or something like that.
The first Happy Meal I actually remember was an X-Men cartoon tie-in in 1992 or 1993, but it’s quite possible there were others before.

  2. I remember being so incredibly upset as a child when I saw these transforming McDonalds bots advertised on a US channel – but my mother discovered they weren’t available in Canada. :'(

I can remember walking back home, and seeing the old-style Styrofoam McD’s containers in the ditch, and wishing I had that transformer. Childhood is full of (minor) disappointments. ^_^
