Review – Halo Blind-Bagged MEGA Blok Purple UNSC Spartan

Line: Halo * Manufacturer: Mega * Year: 2011

We’ve already looked at a few different blind-bagged Marvel Mega Bloks* toys over the last few months — Green Goblin, Battle Damage Iron Man, and War Machine — so there’s actually not a lot that I can say about this latest toy, even though it’s from a different line. So for a change, and because I’m a bit rushed for time this week, I’m gonna focus more on the photos and less on the words as I take a quick peek at this Halo Mega Bloks* blind-bagged mini-figure.

Acceptable Sculpt

As with the Marvel blind-bagged series, this little Purple UNSC Spartan figure’s sculpt isn’t phenomenal, but it’s acceptable and looks enough like the armor design that I’ve got no complaints. After all, the real fun in pretty much all mini-figures (including LEGO and Minimates) is in the cuteness of the designs and the ability to have an entire army of figures that doesn’t require a lot of space.

If you’re after amazing sculpts then you should search out the McFarlane or Play Arts Halo action figures. These little guys are for screwing around with and having fun and not to act as inexpensive and articulated statues on your desk or in your collection.

Already Assembled

Unlike the Marvel blind-bagged figures, the toys in this Halo line come pre-assembled. There’s no need to spend your time snapping on the arms, legs, and head; you’ll have to attach any weapons and backpacks on your own, but the figure’s ready to play with right out of the bag. I’m not sure why these were different, but it certainly made it easier to get to the action of posing my little figures.

Not For Everyone, but Fun for Some

I warned you guys that this review would be quick and easy and more about the photos than me just chattering on. This Halo Mega Bloks* blind-bagged mini-figure is fun but not a work of art. No, this is pure toy and should only be grabbed by hardcore Halo fans or anyone who enjoys the mini-figures from various toy lines.

I’ll likely grab a few more of these, but since I strongly suspect that the real fun with this series is in the large vehicle sets and not just the mini-figures there’s a very good chance that I’ll never get all of the fun out of this line that collectors of the entire series do. It’s a cute toy, but not one that has me switching gears and deciding that I’m not a Halo collector.

Philip Reed wonders if it’s worth trying to mix-n-match parts between the Halo and Marvel lines and then painting the figures. There’s a chance to get a completely new Iron Man design, but is it worth the effort?

  1. These guys are great! I love Halo, blind bags and tiny toys!!! Three-fold awesomeness!!

I have some extras if you’re interested!

  2. I wish they sold the blind packs where I am. They only sell the toy sets, and at a price I can’t quite bring myself to accept. They were on clearance at one point, I regret not getting some when that happened.

Still, I did get one set as an experiment. It had a Covenant Brute and UNSC pilot. I loved the minifigs from there. Wished they were sold cheaply here so I could army build.

The sets themselves are meh. A Covenant cycle thingy and a gun turret. They’re okay but nothing to write home about individually. Might be cool as an army, but the cost is too prohibitive for that (where I am).
