Review – Planet X Unofficial Omega Supreme Head

Thanks to the help of TFW2005 member yoonakron, I was able to get this unofficial Transformers Omega Supreme head for just $10 plus shipping. Planet X produced this as a new head for their completely unofficial War for Cybertron Omega Supreme, but since I don’t have that toy (it’s in the mail!) I’m instead placing the new head on the official Year of the Snake Omega Supreme (at Amazon.com*). And hey, it fits fairly well.

Tank Mode

First up we have the little eight-wheeled rolling tank. As with the original Omega Supreme toy, released in 1985, the head of Omega Supreme is a small tank that can roll around and blast things. The wheels work well, the gun elevates — and falls back down unless you jam it up at an angle — and what you see is what you get. It’s not the most complicated design out there, but it works well for what it is.

Head Mode

Above you can see another shot of the tank and the head snapped into place on the official Year of the Snake Omega Supreme (at Amazon.com*). Actually, “snapped” is a rather strong word since it more just rests in place. You can trust the tank to stay in place okay, but turn the toy upside down or move too fast and that little head will come right out.

Nice Sculpt, but I Miss the Canopy

Above is the official Year of the Snake Omega Supreme (at Amazon.com*) while below is the Planet X unofficial head. The new sculpt looks great, but what would make this head even cooler would be if it included a translucent canopy to make it look even more like Omega Supreme. Do we need to wait for a third party manufacturer to create an add-on for this third party toy? Maybe. It has happened before.

Closing Thoughts

You do not at all need this head. The plastic is top notch and the overall construction and design are great, but it’s a minor add-on part and doesn’t dramatically change or improve the official Year of the Snake Omega Supreme (at Amazon.com*). But it may make a big difference to how the unofficial War for Cybertron Omega Supreme looks, so I’ll definitely be testing this new head once that unofficial Omega Supreme reaches me.

This is a fantastic convention exclusive because it’s neat, but not so damned awesome that everyone who misses the convention feels the need to rush out and spend tons of cash on eBay. The $10 plus shipping I paid felt perfect for what I got; I suggest not paying more than $15 or so if you do decide to buy this head for your own collection.
