“1/3 off all robot toys” in 1984
We don’t find many ads for Starriors toys. Why is that? Well, Tomy’s Starriors line launched at an odd time, right in 1984 when transforming robot toys were the hot thing, meaning that Tomy’s non-transforming Starriors robots looked quaint and simple by comparison. That’s a bit unfair to the Starriors — fantastic toy designs! — but the reality of the time was, to be honest, that lines like Starriors and Robo Force simply couldn’t compete with the hotness of the moment.
Fortunately, though, a bit of digging can still reveal Starriors advertisements from when the toys were new. Ads like this 1984 newspaper ad which also includes Barbie and Kenner’s Star Wars toys. Yeah, this feels like a good way to start a Saturday.
