1965 Popular Science Article on Adults and Games
Mainstream media usually focuses on toys and games during November and December, exactly that time of year when parents and grandparents are searching for the perfect Christmas gifts. And this 1965 Popular Science article shows us the fascination with toys and games during the holidays isn’t anything new. What makes this particular article extra fun, though, is the focus on adults playing games.
“James J. Shea, president of Milton Bradley Co. says his company is selling 35 percent more adult games now than it was just a few years ago.”
Kinda awesome to see this article and the seeds of what is today a much larger industry. As this 2014 Guardian article shows, games are currently a growth industry, and a lot of that’s because so many adults today are willing to sit down and play board and card games with their friends. That was fairly new in the sixties, and reading over this Popular Science article makes me think it would be nice to see a mainstream magazine today run something similar about boardgames.
