1982 E.T. Board and Card Games Newspaper Advertisement
Back in 1982, everyone was certain that the E.T. movie success would translate directly into holiday sales, and the world pumped out far more E.T. merchandise than anyone wanted. For example, scrolling to page 34 in this paper in the Google Newspaper Archives shows us to games by Parker Brothers, both of which can be easily found today and are quite inexpensive.
Lesson: Just because a movie is popular does not mean the merchandise will succeed.
