1982 Revell Power Lords Commercial
Another bit of advertising fun from the eighties that really needs to be archived at the Power Lords Return website, the animation in this short commercial has some raw energy to it that would have been cool to see in an animated feature. The Adam Power transformation sequence is especially trippy; maybe this was originally animated in the seventies and held back until the toys were created in the eighties.
they just don’t make commercials like that anymore
@raf – The question in my mind is:
Why don’t they make commercials like this these days?
With some 30 years perspective it’s easier to see now why PL didn’t sell so great. The animation looks pretty rough–almost unfinished! I’m gonna assume that the heads of some the aliens being cut off is an artifact of the clip and not the actual commercial (hopefully!).
It’s a testament to lines like He-Man (Mattel) and Star Wars (Kenner) that had the cash to do put out (at the time) top-notch ad work. Their commercials came complete with storylines. Revell seems to have had a hard time showing the characters clearly onscreen!
@Jay – I think the alien weirdness of these designs didn’t help at the time. But yeah, Mattel and Kenner (and Hasbro) knew how to make commercials that sold toys.
A lost art these days.
Why did they always pick the kids that looked like they didn’t know how to play with the toys?
@Chris – Well, if they had ever picked me for a toy commercial the work would have never ended. I doubt I would have cared enough about the “work” to cooperate. Hey, I’m playing with toys over here!
