1984 Gay Toys Laser Craft and Laser Plane at Albertsons

If you’re unfamiliar with the Gay Toys plastic vehicles of the eighties, I suggest taking a look at this hisstank.com thread for photos and info on the line. These were inexpensive trucks, cars, spaceships, and other vehicles, some of which were fully compatible with the 3.75-inch scale Star Wars and G.I. Joe action figures of the time.

Fantastic stuff, and seeing the Albertsons advertisement in this 1984 newspaper (jump to p. 17) should have many of you running to eBay to look for the ships. Trust me, you’re not gonna find one for the $2.99 price shown in the ad.

  1. $2.99 is pretty cheap–one Joe or SW figure would have cost you that much, and yet you get two vehicles and two figures for the same price. I remember having a jeep and helicopter set with some generic army guys. Those things lasted for years. This space set is even better.

  2. $2.99 being about the same price as a single Joe or Star Wars figure.

I had a generic army jeep and helicopter set with a plain army guy I think was made by this company. Also, later on, I had a “convoy” truck with a removable canopy over the bed and seats in the rear that Joe butts would sort of clip into. I found all these cheapo subsititute vehicles extremely tough and versatile. I’ve only discovered the space vehicles in the last couple years–they’re even better.
