1984 Transformers “Autobot Car” and “Decepticon Spy” Newspaper Advertisement

December 5, 1984. If you have ever caught yourself complaining about how many of today’s Transformers toys are repaints and retools of other Transformers, please stop and consider for a moment this 1984 newspaper ad. Notice that we see a Decepticon “Seeker” jet, either Rumble or Frenzy, and what I am certain is Ratchet all in a single ad, and all retools and repaints. This practice has been a part of the Transformers line since the beginning, which is why I am confused when I hear “that’s just another retool.” The practice or reuse is in the brand’s DNA!
