1987 ToysRUs Advertisement for Masters of the Universe
There’s a 1987 TRU ad posted at archive.org that deserves our attention. There are a handful of toylines represented in the ad, but I’d like to zero in on Mattel’s Masters of the Universe action figures as shown in the below ad block. The image only shows three figures, but it makes mention of Rokkon and Stonedar, two of the stranger figures from a time when Mattel was trying to adjust the brand to stay relevant with the interests of kids.
Better still, the ad also includes the Bionatops dinosaur toy, which you can see over at he-man.org. That dinosaur looks fantastic! Silly, yes, but also incredible. The Masters of the Universe toys of the eighties never lacked for creativity.
