1988 Forgotten Realms Advertisement
We’ve seen the Forgotten Realms series advertised in comics before (see “On the 3,651st Day, We Rested.â€), and with this ad from a 1988 issue of DC’s COPS we again see TSR promoting their then-new Dungeons & Dragons game world.
I remember that the City System* box set wasn’t quite as cool as I was hoping and Kara Tur* was simply okay, but it was those Forgotten Realms novels that I believe stand out as the best idea TSR had at the time. Constructing stories and worlds can pay off, and looking back after almost 30 years I feel it’s safe to say TSR did well when they constructed the base for their Forgotten Realms setting.

TSR produced tons of great novels although Spellfire there always amuses me because it’s Ed Greenwood creating a whole new magic system for only his character that no one else can use.
Years later when they created stats for all the book characters, I remember Shandril had the most convoluted one because of the pages of new info needed to put the power of spellfire into AD&D 2nd.
As to the game itself, I remember thinking when I finally got to read some of these products I realized that the ads were usually way cooler than the actual game material.
