1988 Nuts & Voltz Roleplaying Game

Do you remember the 1985 TSR roleplaying game, Proton Fire, that I mentioned a few years ago? Well, word is that that unreleased RPG may have eventually been published as Nuts & Voltz in issue #10 of White Wolf magazine (find at Amazon.com*). I stress may here for one reason: It’s unclear exactly what truly happened to the work on Proton Fire.

Still, that didn’t stop me from chasing down a copy of the magazine — cheap on eBay! — and immediately flipping to the RPG inside. Written by Mearle and Jackie Rasmussen, the game is packed inside 21-pages of the magazine and leaves me wishing there was more information on the setting. As an eighties game, Nuts & Voltz spends maybe too much time on crunchy rules and not enough on setting, but reading through all of this I could think of only one thing: How well would this blend with the 1983 Droids RPG that I’ve mentioned before?

This is absolutely not worth spending a lot on, but I did want to share that the magazine is now in my hands in case any of you were wondering if I knew about the possible connection between Proton Fire and Nuts & Voltz. I do, but I don’t know anything beyond that possibility . . . though I wish I could find out what really happened to Proton Fire.

  1. Ah, Proton Fire. The game I was so excited for, but never got Dragon #100, so did not find out ’til much later that it as not to be. And I was asking in hobby shops for moths about it before someone kindly broke the news to me.
