1989 G.I. Joe “Stop Cobra In Their Tracks!” Marketing Insert
After think I made it clear in Each Sold Separately* and Action Figures Not Included* that I’m a fan of the action figure marketing of the eighties. Toymakers, especially Hasbro and Mattel, perfected the art of selling toys to kids during the eighties, and the inserts like this one from 1989 helped drive sales after we got our new toys home.
Hasbro’s G.I. Joe series (find at Amazon.com*) was always offering us fantastic promotional inserts, and this 1989 Stop Cobra In Their Tracks! insert is another example of Hasbro selling older toys to kids for cash + Flag Points. Taking stock that was no longer viable at retail and selling it to us as “special” was a genius move, and it leaves me asking: Just how much money was Hasbro making each year off of these marketing inserts? I’d love to know!
