30 Years of the Jedi
Thirty years ago today I sat down in a theater to watch Return of the Jedi, the theater visit a gift from my parents for my eleventh birthday. By the time I saw the movie I had already stared at the Return of the Jedi action figure card backs — which had the Ewoks blacked out so they would be a surprise — and my mail order Admiral Ackbar had arrived a few months earlier. I didn’t know what to expect from the movie, but I’m fairly certain I never once imagined that thirty years later I’d devote a day to writing about the movie and all of the wonderful toys.

Jedi was the first movie I went to as a family with my mom and dad. It was also the only Star Wars film I got to see in the theatre during its initial run. I was probably 4 or 5 and the only part of the film I remember from that night out was at the end where the Falcon narrowly escapes the exploding Death Star with Lando at the controls. The space battle scenes were my favorite (and still are).
