’97 is the summer of Spawn.

There for a few years in the nineties it looked like McFarlane’s Spawn was going to be a major hit. The comic launched strong, McFarlane dominated the toy shelves with Spawn action figures, and the HBO Spawn Animated Series* hit the air right before the live-action movie reached theaters. Unfortunately for Spawn, though, the feature film wasn’t as strong as we were hoping for, and it felt like the character suffered a blow that it never recovered from. Seriously, did Spawn ever feel as important as it did before the movie was released?

Here we get a glimpse of Spawn entering mainstream entertainment in the July, 1997, issue of CMJ New Music Magazine. Even here, though, the cracks in the Spawn franchise are starting to show:
