Matt Doughty’s Custom Star Wars Walker

I shot these photos back in October when I was visiting Matt Doughty (Onell Design) and Matt showed me around his toy collection (mentioned here). Well, Matt is not only a toy designed but also an insane customizer, and one of the cooler custom toys in his collection is this wicked Star Wars walker.

You’ll have to forgive the quality of the photos. I was working the best I could, but some of the shots just aren’t all that fantastic. Still, I think there’s enough detail here to give you an idea of what you’re looking at. Yes, that’s a classic INT-4 mini-rig (review here) at the heart of this walker design.

This custom toy is heavy as hell, with bits of metal and plastic used to construct the monstrosity. I have no idea how many toys — or how many hours of Matt’s life — were sacrificed to construct this awesome custom toy, but the sacrifice was definitely worth it since this is such a unique addition to Matt’s collection of Star Wars toys. The working cockpit is nice, but what’s most impressive is that this thing can stand on its own. The balance is better then I’ve seen in some mass-produced toys.

I remember building my own Star Wars toys out of whatever I could find when I was a kid, but I never took my experiments as far down the path as Matt has. I can only imagine what I would have been able to create if I had kept at it; well, Matt’s custom work here is an inspiration and has me wondering what sort of Star Wars custom toy I could build today if I sunk hundreds of hours into one project.

This is a cool toy and one I thought you guys would enjoy seeing. I guess we shouldn’t be surprised that the guy behind the Glyos System (Onell Design) would be such a hardcore customizer, but I have to admit it was a little shocking to find this contraption hidden in Matt’s toy collection.
