Sucker Punch, Geeks Fall Over Themselves for Hollywood

The Sucker Punch movie trailer has geeks the world over falling all over themselves in anticipation the movie. But not me. Why? Because I’m old, grumpy, and don’t have any faith in Hollywood creating a great movie. The director’s previous films — 300* and The Watchmen** — were okay, but I personally didn’t find them spectacular works of art that earned the goobering that went along with them.

What I do have faith in, though, is Hollywood’s ability to create a fantastic trailer. And for nerds everywhere to get excited when half-naked hotties appear in a film with this much insane geekness wrapped in it. Yes, the trailer is well-made, and the hype is on, but can someone give us a summary of the film’s plot that makes me care?

I was gonna ignore the hype and over-reaction to Sucker Punch, but I’m getting bombarded from every direction so I figure it’s my right to push back. Let’s not start screaming how great the film is until we actually see it. After all, never forget what happened to geeks everywhere back in 1999 when we got over-excited about a film before it hit theaters.

  1. Looks pretty much like “Robo Geisha” storywise to me, but this one here sports super-duper CG and sexyness! What else you want!? haha. I think i gonna forget about it until it’s released but i kind of look forward to see it.

  2. I completely concur. The trailer screams style over substance to me. “Wouldn’t it be cool if…” overload.

Sucker Punch reminds me of that scene in Jackie Brown with Sam Jackson and Robert De Niro where they’re watching that video with chicks in bikinis firing machine guns. They’re all Beavis and Buttheading it up thinking it’s the coolest thing in the world, yet what I find interesting is Tarantino juxtaposing this mentality with the story of an older Pam Grier (which was infinitely more engaging.) Sure, looking back, her blaxsploitation flicks are fun, but Jackie Brown is really where it’s at.

  3. I don’t know… I sometimes like going to see “wouldn’t it be cool if” movies. I guess if it doesn’t take itself to seriously then it could work. Either way, the Sucker Punch trailer is visually entertaining. I entertained by Watchmen and 300 so I’ll probably enjoy this too. I’m not going goober over it, but I’m still looking forward to seeing it. Getting over psyched about anything can really set a person up for a crash.

  4. Haha I’m reminded of the show Married with Children, where Al had a Juggs magazine and on the cover it said something to the effect of “no faces!” (at least I am pretty sure that’s where that entered my psyche.)

In this case I’d say it’s “no plot” and that’s probably fine with everyone. Except you.

    Curmudgeon 😉
