Guest Post – Black Canary Barbie

Katie (Tumblr) is back, this time bringing Barbie to battlegrip.com. But it’s not your average Barbie, so keep reading to learn about this DC-related doll. -Phil

A few months ago, I was at a flea market in Wisconsin and happened on a booth that had for sale the official “Black Label Black Canary Barbie”.

I haven’t owned a Barbie since I was thirteen, but I was drawn to this one as  DC fan, and also detailed costume.

Mattel defines Black Label as “Sensational dolls designed for the adult collector.” Just sussing out EXACTLY what this means isn’t an easy task. Included in the line are “fashion model” dolls, along with “Die Another Day” Halle Berry in her swimsuit, to Goldie Hawn in her “Laugh In” outfit.

But the only DC character to be included in this line is Black Canary, and I’m curious as to exactly WHY. Is it her fishnets? Is it her mostly leather ensemble? (the Barbie outfit is really made of PVC like material). Why only her?

The clothes have pretty much been sewn onto the doll, except for the cuffs and boots. I liked the details of the gold on her boots, since that’s what Black Canary wears in the modern comics. The gloves are her hand painted black, and aren’t attached to the cuffs, however. She has the normal points of articulation associated with a modern Barbie, along with the standard synthetic styled hair.

My only complaints is that the boots make it hard for her to be propped up or stand without the plastic doll stand, as they have the slippery PVC material on the bottom.

Overall, I’d rate this doll an 8/10.

  1. There was also a Batgirl in this line. I think of her always as pretty tempting to get at cons – i … dunno why… but also the DcD 13″ has a face of sculptural perfection! Damn dolls!
