Review – Hot Wheels El Superfasto

Line: Hot Wheels * Manufacturer: Mattel * Year: 2010 * Ages: 3+

Now here is one amazingly hot Hot Wheels car. The El Superfasto (Hot Wheels wiki), one of the newer releases in the line, may have a lot of plastic but the effect is impressive and couldn’t have been pulled off with metal. What we’ve got here is a slick, mean car with a metal chassis, translucent green plastic body, and a red plastic shell that snaps on over the green body. Did I mention that this is a cool car design?

Sleek!

Take a look at the El Superfasto photo, below, and notice how the sides of the body sweep back in on the design and then the wheelhubs jut back out. Almost like a reverse-arrow, the El Superfasto may have jumped off of the shelves because of the colors but it’s the toy’s shape that makes me starting to think that if I see the car in a variant colorway then I’ll wind up with a second one.

And Translucent Green!

Sure it almost has a Christmas-feel, but that translucent green body wrapped by a red plastic shell gives the car a great look. While I was looking over the car I showed it to Gina and pointed out how the green plastic went under the red so after a few moments with the car she had the red popped off and showed me how the two pieces separated. I never would have taken that risk, but she did and the car comes apart and goes back together very easily.

If you’d like a look at the car minus the shell see its entry at the Hot Wheels wiki and scroll down. Anyone who is into customizing Hot Wheels toys could dramatically change the car’s look by painting the red shell in silver. Actually, that’s a colorway Mattel should consider releasing.

Closing Thoughts

Despite the recent price increase — I’m seeing Hot Wheels cars in the Austin area priced between $1.05 and $1.10 these days — this entire series is still a great deal and I definitely enjoy Hot Wheels designs more than I do Matchbox or most other brands. And it’s all because Hot Wheels is loaded with odd, almost concept-like car designs that you just don’t get from other brands.

The El Superfasto is an example of a great design and a car that would be a lot of fun to own in real life. It may be a little tough to see through the small windows, but with a translucent body you can just lean down a little and look through the front of the car. Where’s the engine go? That’s a problem for the engineers, not me. I just wanna drive this beast.

Philip Reed is trying to work out a good way to display his toy cars but still hasn’t found any display options that he likes.

  1. @Talyn – Yeah, that is a pretty fun name. I need to stop looking in the Hot Wheels aisle, though, because there are too many fun car designs hiding on those pegs.

  2. It’s a Luchador! It’s a Car! It’s a Luchador and a car!

    Plus it’s in Mexico’s colors!

More Luchador names please mattel :~)
