Review – Energizer MAX Transformers Racers

Line: Transformers * Manufacturer: Hasbro * Year: 2011

Do you need batteries? Then get out there now, because if you buy Energizer brand batteries you may just get yourself a free Transformers Racer toy car. After seeing this recent post at Seibertron I set off in search of the deal, and fortunately Gina spotted the battery sets while we were at the grocery store. And not only did we get free Transformers plastic toy cars with the batteries but there was an in-store coupon to get free “Fun Size” candy bags with battery purchase so shortly after discovering the packs we had batteries, toy cars, and candy. How can any of that be a bad thing?

Packaging

As you can see, these cars are packed one to a battery pack and you can clearly see which car you’re getting. There appear to be only two — one Autobot and one Decepticon — but if you stumble across any other colors or variants please let me know.

Cheap Plastic Cars

Don’t expect too much out of these free Transformers Racers toy cars. Roughly the same scale as Hot Wheels cars, these plastic toys are light and cheap with none of the quality feeling that you get from die-cast metal toy cars. Even the windows are just stickers applied to the car (and not even on the side windows). But I suppose that for a free toy packed inside a pack of batteries these aren’t all that bad; hell, the logos on the cars even feel like Transformers Generation One designs so fans of the classics may very well want these cheap cars in their toy collections.

Motorized!

But as cheap as these are they’re at least equipped with pull-back motors which give them a bit more play value than I first expected. And the motors feel pretty strong, propelling the toys at a reasonably fast rate of speed and allowing them to crash into anything in their way. But if you’re a toy collector the last thing you’ll want to do is ram anything with these cars because between the stickers and plastic construction they can’t take much damage.

Closing Thoughts

It’s cool to see toy cars packed in with batteries, and it’s especially neat that Hasbro partnered with Energizer to get Transformers-branded toy cars out there on shelves in a promotion that’s just begging to be a Christmas special. After all, any parents buying toys that need batteries may as well go ahead and buy a pack or two of these batteries because you get the batteries to power another gift and the batteries come complete with another toy.

There’s absolutely no reason to rush out and grab these because they’re just very cheap batteries. But if you find yourself often burning through batteries — and if you can combine this deal with another coupon like we did — then stock up! After all, the more toy cars that you’ve got the wilder your races will be.

Or the geekier your toy collection will be. It’s something like that.

Philip Reed admits that even though he expected these plastic cars to kinda suck he still wanted them.
