Transformers and Zombies in City of Fear

IDW’s Infestation series (see the TFWiki) earlier this year wasn’t the first time that we’ve seen zombies infect the Transformers universe. Actually, zombies have appeared many times — which isn’t much of a shock since zombies are often fun — but today we’re going way back to the eighties for a quick peek at the Transformers UK story, City of Fear.

In City of Fear we see Simon Furman introducing us to the concept of zombies on Cybertron as he uses the then-new Transformers Sparkabots (TFWiki) and the Duocon Flywheels (Flywheels review here) to carry a story that’s fun and actually a little more involved than expected.

Fans of the Wreckers, that Autobot suicide squad led by Springer, get a lot of Wreckers action in the story and we even get to encounter a zombie Impactor during the adventure. The art’s got that slightly-off but still fun style that most Transformers UK stories had in the eighties and you can get a complete summary at the TFWiki. The story’s worth reading if you’re a Transformers fan and fortunately it’s fairly easy to grab these days since two collections are just a click away:

I’ve got the first version (from Titan Books) and without even seeing the IDW reprint I know I like the Titan version better since it’s slightly larger. The IDW version isn’t one of those greatly-reduced reprints, though, so either way you go is a good choice.

And with Halloween right around the corner there’s no better time for a zombie Transformers story than today, so enjoy the summary and don’t let any zombies sneak up on you.
