MakeToys Battle Tanker First Thoughts
I must be the stupidest Transformers collector on the planet. The Reveal the Shield Optimus Prime* upgrade arrived today and I’ve started working on assembling the bits to enhance Prime’s look. I got the new belt piece on, the head went on with no problems, and I even managed to complete all of the steps to add the new legs, hands, forearms, and the battery pack and sword. No problems!
And then I started on the trailer and everything went to hell. Is it too much to ask for extremely clear and illustrated instructions that show each individual part? These damned photo instructions with vague arrows and movements that I just cannot understand are not helping my brain any. I must be a real idiot to get stumped on step one, but that’s exactly what happened when I started to transform the trailer parts into the arm cannons.
Time for me to track down a video review and see if they go through each and every damned step slowly so I can figure out what’s happening. I think I know what I need to do, but the joints are really tight and I’d rather not snap a $100 toy within hours of it arriving. I’m hoping a video saves me, because up until I hit the trailer problem I was really enjoying this upgrade.

You need to literally swivel the small grey circle that both arms are connected to, 180 degrees. There’s a small arrow sculpted on it that will either be pointing up or down, depending on the mode. It’s easily the set’s biggest fault due to both the confusing instructions and frightening joint tolerances, combined with the difficulty in deducing exactly how the pressure needs to be applied to avoid simply spinning the individual arms in place.
On the bright side, it doesn’t sound like a spot that commonly breaks! MakeToy just needs to learn to instruction a lot better.
@Vangelus – Thanks! I tried it and it’s stiff but does turn. Now to work out the next couple of steps . . .
loosen the screw on the grey circle which acts as the base for the legs… It works… Also… Orientate both legs so that their sides are lined up with each other… Hold both together and turn… Basically you need to have turn moment on both legs to make it turn easily…
You should have waited out for the head replacement from maketoys… Cos the snap on one cannot be removed with breaking the ball joint… In the event that you find a cheap United prime and decide to use him instead of the RTS one… =)
@booster – Thanks, I’ll try that.
The set I got came with the replacement head and it worked just fine. I unscrewed and removed the old head and then snapped the new head in place and tightened the screw on the new head. The only complaint I have with the head is it sits high; there’s a post showing under Prime’s head now.
If nothing else you’ve got a less-stumpy Laser Prime?
