A Visit With Onell Design

With PAX East ending it’s time to start directing my attention to the rest of my time before going home . . . and that means that it’s time for me to prepare for my visit to Glyos HQ (Onell Design). And just as I did when I visited last fall, I’m going to ask Matt Doughty more questions about the status and direction of the Glyos System toys . . . and I’m open to your questions.

So if you have questions post here. No promises that every question will be answered, but I’ll do what I can to collect intel on the upcoming waves of Glyos System toys. And while you wait for me to get busy putting your questions to Matt you can always check last year’s questions and answered.

  1. How much the concept of King Crayboth is developed and integrated in the Glyos universe at present time? (both graphically and story-wise)

  2. Will the ZED/ZRU Colorways be revisited?

Will the new Voss colorway also feature some other trans. colors?

  3. With the move towards more and more vinyl will we see a new vinyl body this year?

Do you enjoy receiving customs from your fans or do you feel that they are taking liberties with your properties?

  4. Here’s a mix of questions I have, and questions I’ve heard from folks asking about Glyos. Thank you for passing things along once again!

-Do you feel any form of outright hinges or ball-socket joints may find their way into the current form of Glyos, in PVC or Vinyl?

-The last several months have felt like a series of successes in experimenting with Glyos vinyl pieces and whether or not they would succeed outside of a niche of the audience. Specifically, from the Big Rig, to the Block, to the Wedges + Switch Pins. Has this path led you to feel that some previously-discarded ideas (in vinyl or PVC) may now be valid to try out?

-I’ve seen some amazing colourway homages since getting into the line in early 2011. Are there any in particular that you’re still really eager to try to do, perhaps with new experiments in what can be poured into the PVC molds (colour-change, metallics, other glow-in-the-dark hues, etc)?

-Between the Hub Sets and Spymonkey’s own parts sets, and the new vinyl pieces, Glyos build options have had an exponential increase of late. What direction(s) do you think the build potential of the line could move into next?

-Are the Crayboths the final bastions of fully packaged releases in the Glyos shop, or is there a chance that tiny boxes may return someday?

  5. I would like to know if Matt has heard of Toycon UK and if he would consider taking the flight over to exhibit there next year? (that goes for you too Phil it would be great to meet you both over here)

  6. Story-wise, does the Glyos United drop mean that we’ll soon be getting a 100% evil, take-no-hostages villain appearing? Or does Zorennor represent not so much a threat as it does a waypoint into updating the cool colorways and toy inspirations of decades past, across the entire Glyos sculpt catalog?

Production-wise, which god or gods do I have to pray to in order to get clear colorless wedges and switch pins into the mix? My Glyan commodity traders are getting restless. 🙂

And – as a designer, which do you find more value in? A bold new abstract design or a familiar design interpreted creatively?
