That was a fast response! Yesterday I shared toy spaceship patent drawings by designer Kam Wah Wei with all of you (see “Toy Spaceship Designs by Kam Wah Wei”) and now we already have more photos of the toy, but this time weatherized and beaten by Glyos System designer Matt Doughty of Onell Design. Matt used the customized toy in his Microshow Forever book; you can see some scans of the book in Microbry’s “Microshow Forever” Flickr set.

Along with the photos, Matt also shared:

I originally bought the set, which came in this strange, vacu-sealed clear slipover case, at Toys R Us. It was kind of expensive for the time, running around $25 in the mid to late 90’s if I remember right. The gimmick was a little drill like wrench thingy which you connected the parts with. The plastic is pretty heavy and the clear canopy assemblies are kind of awesome and tinted.

Another thing I remembered about the box was that an awesome pilot was shown, but not offered in the set. I think it was like a cardboard cut out type thing. The pilot was like a Joe/Stormtrooper type. I recall stacks of this set, lining up the walls, up high on the top of the shelves, like overstock in Toys R Us. They never seemed to go on sale.

Thanks, Matt, for the photos and for sharing what you know of the Kam Wah Wei toy spaceship designs.

Hopefully more information — and even more pics! — will surface because I would love to track down whatever details I can. And what is especially fun for me is that I was right when I suggested these would look incredible once someone customized them. Maybe there are some shots of that packaging online just waiting to be discovered . . .
