Spotted Online – Masters of the Universe Artwork at Monster Brains
It’s almost a crime that I can’t walk out and buy a collection of eighties Masters of the Universe artwork. Mattel had some amazing artwork for their Masters of the Universe toys back in the eighties and I would happily drop down $75 or $100 for a hefty, fabulously-bound and produced hardcover collection of the old artwork.
But, for now, I have to rely on sites like Monster Brains to post artwork for me to enjoy.
In the Masters of the Universe set at Flickr are fifty Masters of the Universe paintings and comic pages, and the resolution is good enough that I was able to crop sections out of this painting by Earl Norem — read more about Norem at Vaults of Grayskull — so that we can all get a look at individual elements as well as the overall scene.
The post at Monster Brains also showcases artwork by William George and Esteban Maroto and scanning through all of these images really does make me wish there was a book. But there isn’t, and Mattel’s last attempt at a book in 2009 (first mentioned here, 2009 he-man.org thread here) was laughable with both their presentation being weak and distribution being an insult to fans.
For now I’ll have to be happy with sites posting artwork. And if I want to flip through a well-crafted Masters of the Universe hardcover I have to turn to the Art of Masters of the Universe Toy Design book (reading post here) since it seems to be the only competently-produced Masters of the Universe book that’s focused on art and toy design.
