DC Armored Lex Luthor Action Figure Trailer Online

Damn you, DC Collectibles! I continue to not have the greatest love for the DC Collectibles action figures — see my Mister Freeze review and Witch Hunter Batman review for a few examples of my thoughts on DC’s toys — and yet I continue to be drawn to their toys. The latest? Well, this trailer for an upcoming deluxe Armored Lex Luthor certainly counts as “that looks sweet!” followed immediately by my brain saying: “But how will it really be out of the package?”

Shut up, brain!

  1. DC Collectibles (also responsible for the StarCraft Marine figure, and older ‘DC Direct’ figures) suffers some a major design flaw:

Clear plastic joints. Seriously, what is up with that? Anyone’s whose owned a ‘clear’ figure variant usually realizes they’re more fragile due to their transparency.

Despite the improving articulation of DCC/DCD figures, internal balljoints, and joints in general are made from a very brittle (typically clear) plastic.

Since I disassemble figures regularly for customizing, I’ve seen more than my fair share of this. Other times, it’s because a head (or entire torso and arm, in the case of my DCC Starcraft Marine) just *broke* when the figure slumped over on its shelf- No diving necessary. 🙁

DCC would do well to take a page from NECA’s design, and move toward solid ABS plastic, or at the very least adopt Mattel-quality hard plastic joints.

Until then, I’m wary of new DCC releases, no matter how cool they look.

  2. @Blayne – Clear joints? That is weird. But I don’t feel so bad now knowing I’m not alone in finding the DC Direct/Collectibles figures to be far less impressive in person than in photos. Sometimes when I review their toys the comments make me feel like I’m being too picky or something.

  3. @Phillip Reed: every DCC/DCD figure I’ve purchased in the past few years suffers from that odd clear plastic ball joints. Their articulation system is moving toward NECA style ball/socket joints, but the overall plastic quality makes me very aprehensive to buy anything they produce. Most outcry I’ve read online stems from people pset that a beloved renditon of a character gets a bad review – despire clear weakness in articulation/design quality. That’s something that really can’t be helped. In any case, I prefer reviews that highlight the quality of the figure over reviews that gush how much they love the character design it’s based on. 🙂

I have a few DCC figures on order via BBTS – fingers crossed these latest designs (with ab-crunches and a waist swivel) have better joint quality.

  4. Just wanted to post a followup: I received my POL order from BBTS.com today, and it had x2 DC Direct / Collectibles figures in it. The Arkham City Azarel suffers from the general ‘meh’ articulation – but the Arkam Origins Batman? Best batman figure ever made. Seriously!

He’s currently listed as Sold Out – but I’d recommend tracking this one down at all costs. I was going to customize a similar figure into existence, but DC Collectibles produced an amazing product this time around and saved me the trouble. Wow.
