Review – Toygraph Space Trooper AZ with Chainsaw Hand
I mentioned a few weeks ago that I had scored more of Toygraph’s Space Troopers (posted here) and today I’m sharing one of the new buys, the AZ with Chainsaw Hand that is identified as #3 in the Death Climax series. Since I’ve reviewed so many of these toys before this review will be mostly pics. Scan down for links to the older reviews if you haven’t seen this toy line before.
Why Do I Keep Buying These?
With over twenty of Toygraph’s Space Troopers in my collection you would think I’m as loaded with Space Troopers as I’ll ever be, but there’s just something special about the toys that has me keeping an eye open for bargains on more of the toys. I think it’s the combination of retro sci-fi styling with the addictive chemicals in the Japanese vinyl that has me after even more of the Space Troopers, or maybe it’s just because of how awesome the shelf looks as I add more and more of the toys to the display.
4.5-Inches Tall and Fun
With so many shared parts across the line you would think I’d have exhausted all of the fun that one can have with the Space Troopers . . . but you would be wrong! The chainsaw hand and coloring changes make this one just different enough from the other Space Troopers in my collection, and while the Ghosttrooper is my favorite design in the line the glow-in-the-dark skull-like head of the AZ comes in a close second. It’s unfortunate that this line closed down.
Closing Thoughts
If ever there were a series of toys that are clearly not for everyone I think the Toygraph Space Troopers are it. I’ve spoken with several collectors who see these toys and simply don’t get the appeal of the line, but then I’ve also talked to others who instantly fall in love with the campy 50s goodness of the designs. I know I’m clearly in the “these are awesome” crowd when it comes to Space Troopers, and it is going to be some time yet before I tire of finding the occasional toy in the line and adding it to my collection.
These are fun!
