1998 Ad for hasbrocollectors.com Website

From a 1998 issue of the Star Wars Insider magazine (Amazon.com search*) comes this full-page ad for hasbrocollectors.com, a website that still seems to work . . . but I suspect that what we can see today wasn’t what the site was used for sixteen years ago.

What’s surprising to me is that while I can see G.I. Joe, Transformers, and even sports there’s not a single Star Wars action figure in this ad. Why would Hasbro not include Star Wars toys in an ad that they ran in the Star Wars Insider magazine? I’m very confused.

  1. Not sure what the site used to look like, but the URL seems to just be a redirect to Hasbro.com. Did it offer some sort of tips or advice for collectors?

    1. @Jay – Thanks for the links! That second one mentions the site carried Japanese Beast Wars toys, meaning that Hasbro was offering fans more in 1999 than they do today.

But maybe the current club’s activities basically replace the old hasbrocollectors.com site.

  2. In 1998, Batman and Star Wars toys were still being produced under the Kenner brand name. Hence, probably whey they’re not on Hasbro’s ad.

    1. @Arrrrghface – Weren’t Transformers produced under the Kenner name at that time?

But yeah, maybe Hasbro corporate kept the Kenner/Hasbro names more separated than I realized. Which makes losing the Kenner name make a lot more sense to me. No reason to split marketing efforts across multiple company names in the same sales category.
