Dr. Mindbender Illustrated by Sam Keith?

It’s easy to look back at the early nineties now and shake our heads in wonder at some of the artwork that was published in comics. The original Image era, if you will, was packed with so many lines, pouches, and bulging muscles that there was barely any room for words alongside the hyper-stylized artwork of the day. Anyway, it was while flipping through issue #120 of the Marvel G.I. Joe comics that I stumbled across this Dr. Mindbender illustration by none other than the great Sam Keith (Amazon.com search*).

Okay, I’ll have to admit that this is one twisted take on the evil Cobra mad scientist, and I’d be lying if I didn’t come out and say that I now want to see an entire G.I. Joe comic by Keith. His stylized art still keeps me entertained, and even though he goes for bulging muscles and many lines his work is unique and fun.

  1. I really like Sam Keith’s style. He was the reason I started reading The Maxx, and I love Marvel Comics Presents #100 because we get Sam Keith’s Wolverine, Dr. Doom and Ghost Rider teaming up.
I was really into comics cards as a kid, and any that were drawn by Keith always stood out to me.

I think his style holds up well too, unlike some other artists who were dominant in the 90’s and now look dated.
