Transformers Platinum Edition Insecticons

Way back in the dark ages of 2009 there was a TRU release of the classic Transformers Insecticons (posted here). The stickers seriously sucked — they just wouldn’t stick! — but otherwise this was the 1985 basic Insecticon toys in a new box. (And with new names, but we’ll try and ignore that problem.)

Well, those same molds are coming back. TFW2005 has a post with packaging pics (which also shows the 1985 “Coneheads,” so we can assume those are getting a release) and now tformers.com has pricing info. Looks that that Insecticon pack may be doubling in price vs the 2009 price; wow, that’s way more than inflation can account for so something weird is happening with toy pricing these days.

And word is the toys are in stores right now! Time to decide if you need a new box of Insecticons . . . even if the stickers probably suck.

  1. 6 figures (Insectiens and Coneheads) I actually owned original 80s releases of but sold off, like everything else, to fund my Star Wars obsession of the 90s-00s (which in turn I sold off to partially fund Kaiju Kaos).

  2. Does Hasbro suddenly have a drug habit that needs supporting?

I used to have these guys, but there’s no way I’m coughing up $80 for that much empty space.

  3. Yep, those are awesome, but I guarantee they’ll end up on clearance at that price. Which is bothersome because Hasbro may view it as a failure. It wouldn’t be a failure if they were priced at a more reasonable $40. Two years ago, I put together a G1 Insecticon set for around $25 and Reprolabeled them. Now they look minty fresh, and my nostalgia itch has been thoroughly scratched. Oddly, I would still buy this new reissue if I didn’t feel like Hasbro was straight up stealing from me…
