Choose Your Own Adventure Ad from 1985
Not even a full page, this 1985 Choose Your Own Adventure ad comes from the first issue of Marvel’s Sectaurs comic book. You remember Sectaurs, right? A Coleco action figure series from 1985 that was one of many, many toylines all hoping to achieve a level of success comparable to Masters of the Universe, Transformers, and G.I. Joe, Sectaurs never did get big, but the toys are incredible and definitely worth exploration.
Check the fansector.com page for more info on the toyline.
Oh. I was supposed to be writing about Choose Your Own Adventure books, wasn’t I? Sorry.

I really miss books like this as well as the Fighting Fantasy Books and the Lone Wolf series. I grew up on these and there is nothing new out there today like it.
i wonder what made them choose to focus this ad so heavily on sci-fi, when there was so much more in their line of books.
Martin, have you seen the “Spawn of Choose Your Own Adventure” list on BoardGameGeek.com? There are lots of great things like cyoa, Lone Wolf, and Fighting Fantasy. Some new, even. Have you seen the Sorcery! series?
@Jeremiah Lee – I missed that BGG list.

Wow, thanks! I remember I got the Fabled lands ones but never read them. I feel like the solo adventures myself as I can get lost in them. Tunnels & Trolls sounds interesting which is going to require further research 🙂
A few years ago I was fortunate enough to interview Edward Packard, who helped originate the format back in the 1970s. I was obsessed with these books as a child, and hope to see them come back on a larger scale.
Sadly, R.A. Montgomery, who was integral to the early success of the line passed away late last year too.
@Marvin — definitely check out Fabled Lands! The original 6 are now available on Amazon again, and there are periodic rumours that the remaining (never-before-published) books will turn up at some point.
@Wolf – Is your interview online anywhere that we could read it? Link?
