“Ee-yuk! Garbage Pail Kids!”
The Garbage Pail Kids book* from 2012 is a great joy, but the entire book would have been dramatically improved if it had gone deep into the way in which the cards repelled adults back in the eighties.
Articles like this February 22, 1986 work by Lisa Siegle of the Eugene Register-Guard would make a great resource for anyone investigating the Garbage Pail Kids trading cards. Seriously, this is exactly the sort of story that could form the start of a fun chapter in a book. Consider this quote from the article:
“While children across the country swap the 88 cards issued thus far, offended parents and school officials wonder what to do next. Card trading has been banned in some schools on the East Coast, where the cards were introduced last June. They are spin-offs from the Topps Garbage Pail Can-dy, small plastic garbage pails filled with confectionary debris.”
Great article! And reading this led me to search for the candy, which I found at candyaddict.com. Click through to go deeper down the Garbage Pail Kids rabbit hole.
