Review – NECA (Rocket Launcher) Robocop

robocop

This isn’t the first NECA Robocop action figure we’ve seen here at battlegrip.com. If you’d like to look back to the past before diving into this review there are four earlier reviews for you to enjoy:

I’ll definitely be referencing those reviews as we jump into looking closely at the (Rocket Launcher) Robocop* action figure. You have been warned.

Battle Damaged Repaint

This (Rocket Launcher) Robocop* action figure is a simple repaint of the Battle Damaged Robocop toy (review here) with the addition of a rocket launcher and new pistol. That may feel a bit cheap, but it’s the paint applications that push this over the top and make it a great addition to the shelf of Robocop action figures.

As part of NECA’s video game series, the paint apps evoke the era of blocky video game graphics, and as with the earlier Video Game Robocop (review here) the result is far cooler than I had hoped. NECA really knows how to make a 3-D toy look like it came from a late eighties/early nineties video game!

What’s New?

This 7-inch (Rocket Launcher) Robocop* action figure comes with the rocket, rocket launcher, and pistol shown in the various pics, but it’s the flame effects on the torso and arm that stand out most when you first glance at the toy.

Those semi-translucent plastic flame effects make the toy look like it’s taking serious damage, and the flames feel securely attached to the toy and unlikely to snap off without significant force. I was a bit worried that these would be snap-on parts, but the glue NECA used is strong enough that within a few moments of opening the toy I was twisting and posing the figure and soon stopped worrying over the flames. Yay for playable toys!

A Blend of Earlier Successes

This toy really does feel like NECA took two earlier designs — the Battle Damaged Robocop toy (review here) and Video Game Robocop (review here) — and smashed them together to bring us a variant on a variant. Starting from two excellent toys helped things along, but it was the addition of the rocket launcher (with removable rocket blast) and those awesome flame effects that makes the (Rocket Launcher) Robocop* action figure so much better than I first expected.

Other Opinions

I’m suggesting that if you’re a Robocop fan and have already collected a few of the NECA toys then you will want this one as well. It’s a known and proven sculpt, a beautiful paint design, and just enough new parts to make the toy stand out dramatically from any other Robocop you may own. But I know you’re skeptical and want another opinion, so I’m directing your attention to two other reviews of the toy:

Both agree with me and suggest that you will enjoy the (Rocket Launcher) Robocop* action figure so stop dragging your feet and go find one!

  1. Looks great! I love this series, but I haven’t bought these as I can’t pick between the two versions of him.
I’m still holding out hope NECA will sort out likeness rights with Peter Weller and eventually do an unmasked/removable mask version.

      1. Oh, that would be great. It seems unlikely — but then again, they did do the Blade Fighter from Predator so you never know!

  2. Nice review!

This is a figure I keep meaning to pick up but I always neglect to when I’m somewhere that has him in stock. I love the fire effects on this one!
