Reading – Hi-Fructose 13
So I already took a quick look at a recent issue of Juxtapoz Magazine (post here, so it feels only fitting that I also write down a few words about the most recent issue of Hi-Fructose (website, Twitter). I’ve only read a few issues of Hi-Fructose, but it’s another one of those art magazines that I really need to subscriber to. (Christmas present, maybe?)
As I have with other issues, the first thing that caught my attention were all of the ads for different artist exhibitions at galleries around the world (several of them in California). Page after page of exhibition ads — with art, of course — makes me wonder what it would take to become a traveling art reviewer. Imagine how much fun it would be to do nothing but travel from city to city, attending art event after art event, across the entire world. Yeah, that would be awesome.
(One event that jumped out at me is a Dave McKean showing at Billy Shire Fine Arts in February. I’ve been fortunate enough to meet Dave before, but attending an actual showing would be awesome.)
But you’re not here to read about ads in the magazine, so I’ll keep going.
Artists Featured in this Issue
The meat of the magazine is devoted to interviews with artists, each article also showing a selection of the artist’s work. In this issue we get to admire the works of:
- Lori Earley, a remarkable selection of oil portraits that are both beautiful and disturbing at the same time.
- Kris Kuksi, with spectacular sculptures built out of models, found objects, what appear to be toys, and hundreds of tiny objects all assembled into amazing works that are both modern and ancient all at once.
- Dave Kinsey, a more abstract style of art than the others, Kinsey’s work is a lot like what I would enjoy creating if I was given a year to lock myself away and just create giant paintings.
- Joe Sorren, who brings us surreal, almost-innocent artwork that has bits of the bizarre seeping through its edges.
I’ve Gotta Go
Several other artists are also featured in this issue’s 106-pages, but these are the ones who really jumped out at me. Hit the Hi-Fructose website for more information on the magazine, as well as a fun blog that’s loaded with stuff you don’t get in the magazine. It’s a fun site to follow if you have any interest in art.
