1984 Cabbage Patch Kids Adoption Lawsuit
I started reading Fantasy : The Incredible Cabbage Patch Phenomenon* on Friday and so far have felt like the book’s more of a puff piece than a serious look at the toys. Published in 1984, the book takes a look at the Cabbage Patch Kids at a time when the toys were hot items, and as I read I started wondering what other information I could find on the toys.
Surprisingly, the February, 1984, issue of the ABA Journal — that’s American Bar Association Journal — included a brief sidebar on a lawsuit because the “marketing materials are harmful” because they present the dolls as being adopted, not sold. What?
I can see disliking Cabbage Patch Kids for the adoption angle. Especially if you were an adopted child yourself. Boycott them? Yes. Sue them? Not so much.
