“‘Star Wars,’ the space fantasy, will join Journal comic strips”

After yesterday’s post about the old Star Wars newspaper comic strips I felt it only right that I see what else the Google newspaper archives has on the comic. Well, I quickly uncovered this Milwaukee Journal article from 1979 in which the comic strip is announced. According to the article Lucas was personally supervising the strip, but with all of the work on Empire in 1979 just how much time did Lucas have for this comic strip?

Does anyone have any detailed info on this old Star Wars comic strip? Is there a book somewhere that gives us some backstory and behind-the-scenes info on the comic? I wanna know more!!!

  1. I have this first strip series collected in a photo album by me and my dad back in ’79. We took it from the Rochester, NY Democrat and Chronicle, and it was published on Sundays, in full color. I’m not sure if they have an available online archive. The drawings are really beautiful, and the story has Han Solo in some crazy battle armor fighting alongside his girlfriend to save a planet of innocent people from the encroaching Empire. There’s also a cool TIE-based transport ship that’s based on the twin pod TIE bomber.
