Carmine Infantino Talks Batman and Social Responsibility in 1969
Can you believe the crazy stuff hiding out in the Google newspaper archives? Batman, Robin Split is a 1969 newspaper article by Richard Foster in which we’re told:
“Batman and Robin, the Dynamic Duo that used to tangle with the likes of (Gasp!) the Joker, the Penguin, the Cat Lady and the villainous Scarecrow, have split up.”
The entire article is one of those fluff pieces that happen solely because someone makes a decision that’s designed to attract attention and disrupt the status quo. In this case, as Infantino is quoted in the article, the changes were to make Batman “relevant” and to change Batman’s image from the “camp” of the ABC television show and to let Batman and Robin lead “normal lives.” Yes, the article actually says “normal lives.”
“It isn’t monsters from outer space, or super-crooks, or diabolical henchmen or mad scientists they’re up against — but social issues! Like water and air pollution. And civil rights.”
