Star Wars: Rogue One Rebel Starfighter vs the Mego Buck Rogers Starfighter
Yesterday, several sites posted Star Wars: Rogue One images from the Rogue One Visual Guide* and in the interest of respecting those who wish to go in blind I am putting the rest of what I say behind the jump.
You can see all of the released images at TheForce.net, and you should totally check those out if you’re open to seeing pieces of the Rogue One story before the film is released. I’m pretty excited by what we’ve seen so far, but one image caught my eye and demanded some exploration. The Rebel Starfighter design looks great, and as soon as I saw it I thought of the old Mego Buck Rogers Starfighter toy. The two designs aren’t identical, but there are enough similarities between the two that seeing the new ship made me think of the old.
Great. Now I’m again reminded that I still don’t own one of those old Mego Buck Rogers Starfighter toys.

The Buck Rogers fighter is the first thing I thought of when I saw the Rogue One pics yesterday. Which is appropriate seeing as Buck Rogers serials are one of the primary influences on the original trilogy. I was psyched to see that it’s a cool Frankenstein of elements from the X-wing and Y-wing fighters, with maybe a little A-wing or Jedi starfighter thrown in for good measure.
@rosewater – Y-Wing, yeah! I was so fixated on the Buck Rogers Starfighter design I overlooked the Y-Wing influence in this ship design.
