1978 and “The Marvel Explosion Comes to Television!”

I can barely remember watching both The Incredible Hulk and The Amazing Spider-Man on television when I was five or six, and this 1978 advertisement from Marvel Comics is one that would have caught my eye at the time . . . if I had been reading many comics. Back then, when I was very young, the only comics I can remember reading were out of a big stash one of my uncles owned and the Star Wars comic books my parents bought for me. It wouldn’t be until the early eighties that I started reading various superhero comics . . .

  1. I was always disappointed when I caught the Incredible Hulk re-runs. I knew a little bit about the comics, so I always went in expecting to see the Hulk tearing some stuff up. Sadly, I got 45 minutes of David Banner being mopey, and 5 minutes of the Hulk tossing around props. It was just way too serious for me to enjoy it.

Now Spider-Man, I think I would have enjoyed that show. It just sounded gloriously cheesy.
