Super7 Expanding Masters of the Universe Support
Fans of Mattel’s Masters of the Universe series (find at Amazon.com*) got a bit of a surprise this week: Super7 is picking up where Matty Collector leaves off. Mattel has announced that the Matty Collector site is closing at the end of this year, and in its place Super7 is going to be producing new Masters of the Universe action figures and collectibles.
This is a smart move. The Masters of the Universe brand is currently too small for Mattel to spend much energy on the line, but licensing this out to Super7 keeps the brand alive and generates a little licensing income as Mattel waits for a Masters of the Universe film to reach theaters. I hope we see other large corporations realize that even small brands have value; Disney, can we convince you to license Tron to someone to make a new film or television series? Please?
“Leading into San Diego Comic-Con, Mattel today announced plans for an expanded partnership with Super7 noting they will be developing and distributing an all new range of Masters of the Universe® collectibles beginning in 2017. As a result of the expanded partnership, Mattel will be closing the current MOTU home MattyCollector.com at the end of 2016.”
It’s the end of an era… 8 years since we first saw that King Grayskull at SDCC and we’re hit with the news of MattyCollector’s end. I’m cautiously optimistic. I would like to see MOTUC live on in some form.
