Save $2 to $3 on Steel Monsters in 1986

I shared a 1986 Steel Monsters ad a few days ago, and now I want to point you in the direction of another 1986 newspaper ad for Tonka’s post-apocalyptic vehicle and action figure series. Both the Thunder Road boardgame and this Steel Monsters line were released in 1986, one year after Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome hit theaters (check out this review of the film from 1985), so are we really surprised that two different toymakers produced car combat items for kids at that time?

  1. I do a lot of newspaper looking too and fell into the same Steel Monster trap after finding out about them through old newspapers. There’s also a neat Zayre Steel Monsters ad in their circular that came out around December 18 of ’86.

I also came across a YouTube video of some kids running through a Zayre in ’88 I think and I noticed Steel Monsters in the aisle. It was cool to me but I doubted anyone else in the world would care!

In my daydreams I imagine a GoBots/Steel Monsters crossover along the lines of the Transformers/G.I. Joe stuff that occasionally comes out. Like imagine the Renegades with those Steel Monster alt modes. That would be awesome.
