“They’re bad to the bone.” Skeleton Warriors in 1994

I was flipping through magazines yesterday when I stumbled across this full-page beauty from 1994. Playmates’ Skeleton Warriors action figures (find at Amazon.com*) is one of those lines that never really took off but has developed a cult following over the years. And is it surprising that a series about skeletal beasties and high-tech would become a favorite with collectors? Not at all!

  1. Skeleton Warriors had amazing character design, but it doesn’t really surprise me that it didn’t quite take off. The adult market was probably too small at the time, and for kids I think they were a little too edgy. Coming only a few years after the whole “Satanic Panic” thing that had demonised D&D, heavy metal and everything in between, I think a lot of parents would have been uncomfortable buying something for their kids that looked like a Dan Seagrave painting come to life, haha! I was about 9 when they came out and just remember thinking that my mum would never allow me to have them.
The license did have a mini-revival through Kickstarter a couple of years ago, through October Toys. Baron Dark got made, but funding for Grimskull was unsuccessful. Not sure if there will be any more, which seems a shame.
