1983 Marvel Super Special “Return of the Jedi” Cover by Bill Sienkiewicz
Bill Sienkiewicz is a master artist, and his comics work of the eighties was revolutionary, twisting the look of the titles he worked on and making them pop. Sienkiewicz brought fine art to the world of comic books, and looking through any of his works (find at Amazon.com*) will introduce you to a master artist and his eye for beauty.
And last week, while vacationing in New Mexico, we ran across Marvel Super Special #27 and Marvel’s collected adaptation of Return of the Jedi. The comic was illustrated by Al Williamson — who was an amazing artist in his own right — but it is that cover by Bill Sienkiewicz that I want to share with you today. As you can tell, the issue we uncovered in a dusty bin is a bit battered and worn, but the art stands out as incredible as ever and looking at this makes me wish Marvel had given Sienkiewicz more Star Wars projects back in the eighties. Or, maybe, we’ll get lucky and they will hire him to work on Star Wars comics today.
