1986 Lazer Tag Gift Certificate

I remembered that Lazer Tag was kinda big when it was new, but this 1986 ad for a Lazer Tag gift certificate tells me that the toy was even more popular than I remembered. You couldn’t get a set for Christmas, but you could get a piece of paper promising delivery of a set later. What is it with the toy industry and giving kids paper promises for Christmas?
