Mattel’s Battlestar Galactica on Sale in 1978

Here’s a 1978 newspaper ad that is packed with fun. There are Kenner Star Wars toys as well as a Star Wars watch in this two-page spread, but for now I’d like to direct your attention to Mattel’s Battlestar Galactica spaceships that I’ve zoomed in on. Awesome stuff, and looking at this makes me want to chase down at least a few ships in the line.

  1. I had both the Viper and the Explorer. As well as the Cylon Raider. The only one I was missing was the ground vehicle. The Colonial ships were really cool in that they were modular so you could mix and match pieces, so if you wanted to put the engine unit of the Viper on backwards, so the wing mounted cannons faced backwards, you could.

  2. Loved these toys as a kid. I have to point out that I just looked up the $7.88 price of the Viper in 2017 dollars: $30.64! Remember how small these were? Man, I complain about the cost of toys today, but I think we have it better than I thought!
