Review – Transformers: Titans Return Topspin
One of the two 1985 Transformers Jumpstarters, Topspin has been a part of the Transformers universe since almost the beginning of the brand. In the over three decades since the toy/character was first introduced, the character hasn’t been developed all that much, and the only other official toy since 1985 was a Kreon figure in 2015. Fortunately for us, someone at Hasbro has decided that it is time for the Jumpstarters to return. Say hello to the Titans Return Topspin* toy.
Alt Mode
The new Titans Return Topspin* toy takes over where the 1985 design left off, with Topspin transforming into a Cybertronian spaceship of some kind. There are a lot of little differences between the new toy and the original, but the Titans Return version of the character was clearly inspired by the 1985 Jumpstarter design. As with other toys in the Transformers: Titans Return toyline (find at Amazon.com*), Topspin has a cockpit so that the included Titan Master can pilot the ship when Topspin is in his alt mode.
Robot Mode
As with many of the Deluxe-sized toys in the Transformers: Titans Return line (find at Amazon.com*), Topspin’s robot mode is as playable and fun as we can hope for. The upgraded Topspin design looks sharp, and running through the articulation shows us a poseable action figure that features:
- Head – Ball-jointed neck, because of the Titan Master figure design’s head being the joint.
- Torso – Swivel waist.
- Arms – Swivel-hinge shoulders, swivel biceps, and double-hinged elbows. No wrist articulation at all.
- Legs – Ball-jointed hips, swivel thighs, and double-hinged knees. There’s no ankle articulation to speak of; the only movement is because of the transformation design.
Closing Thoughts
Hasbro’s Titans Return Topspin* is one of my favorite releases in the line, and knowing that the Transformers: Titans Return toyline (find at Amazon.com*) is coming to an end makes me sad. All I can do is hope that Hasbro’s next Transformers line is as fun as this one, and until Power of the Primes ships, I’ll keep opening and Titans Return toys.

if you like Topspin, you should get Triggerhappy, he transforms similarly to Topspin, and is cool as well.
@ron – Triggerhappy is the bestest! 🙂 He has been on my desk at home for a month and I keep transforming him.
Topspin is one of my all-time favorite Transformers! I still have my old G1 jumpstarter. I picked this one up about a month ago and I cannot stop staring at it. I love the forked nose and color scheme. And I’m just so glad they added some chrome and not super shiny grey (bleh!).
The draw for me is pure nostalgia, sure, but REALLY well done nostalgia at that!
Excellent post Phil, keep ’em comin’!
@Jay – I want to get more Titans Returns reviews posted, and currently have three on the desk:
