“101361 – The Third Season Expansion”

I have shared a couple of advertisements for the X-Files CCG before (here and here), so it should come as no shock that when I ran across this ad for the game’s 101361 expansion set — named for Special Agent Fox Mulder’s birthdate — I just had to share.

The X-Files CCG (find at Amazon.com*) is a perfect example of the rise and fall of the collectible card game genre in the nineties. The game performed well at launch, with the publisher releasing promos, running events, and pushing the game hard at conventions, but then things fizzled out and the game quietly died at retail without more expansions reaching store shelves. Too bad, because the Clue-like feel of the game set it apart from all of the other CCGs of the time.

  1. Amazing how many CCGs came and went in those first few years after Magic: The Gathering debuted. I’m far less involved in gaming these days then I was as a teenager, but it seems that Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon and M:tG dominate at the expense of a lot of other interesting games.
