G.I. Joe Cobra La, Pogo, Mamba, and More at Woolworth in 1987

November 29, 1987. This Honolulu newspaper advertisement for Woolworth is perfect for the G.I. Joe fans in the audience, showing off such greats as the Mobile Command Center and Cobra La. In my eyes, this was the one last really big year for G.I. Joe’s popularity in the eighties. The movie didn’t instill new life into the line, and everything mass media seemed to dry up there for a bit. G.I. Joe vanishing from afternoon TV meant a lack of interest and a decline in awareness . . . though the comic continued to be fun.
