Review – Glyos System Hades Pheyden and Cerberus Gobon
Manufacturer: Onell Design * Year: 2009
Last month the guys over at Onell Design joined forces with Matt Walker of Dead Presidents Designs to give us Custom Corps 2.6, a set of two Glyos System figures with a wicked, wicked paint job. With about 50 total sets available, these sold out very fast.
Fortunately for me, I managed to get in under the wire and bought a set for myself. What follows are some photos of the toys along with a few comments. Enjoy the pics, guys!
Hades Pheyden
With an Exellis torso and a Pheyden abdomen and scarred head, the Hades Pheyden is physically just a blending of two existing Glyos System figures (for a closer look at the basic figures see my Glyos System Figures and Glyos System Arquem and Spirico reviews). The figure breaks down into 13 different pieces that can be reassembled into different configurations, but since this is a custom piece I promise you it’s not being taken apart.
No, it’s not the plastic pieces that make this special, but Matt Walker’s amazing paint applications. With a sparkle design on the black pieces, a yellow/gold spray over the glow head, and a gloss finish, Hades Pheyden makes me as jealous of Matt Walker’s painting skills as the Custom Corps War Monger (review here) figures did.
And just to make the pack a little cooler, Matt Walker also painted up a clear Phase Arm using yellow and black sprays. It looks great, but now I’m stuck trying to decide if I display the figure with the Phase Arm or with the fist. This is a tough decision, since the figure looks drastically different with the Phase Arm on . . . I’m sure I’ll do something with it soon, but for now I’m just having fun playing with the toy.
Cerberus Gobon
As with Hades Pheyden, Cerberus Gobon is an existing Glyos System figure with a customized paint job. I reviewed the basic Gobon toy several months ago (review here), so for a close look at the toy you’ll want to read that review.
Cerberus Gobon has the same style of paint job as Hades Pheyden, with a clear body decorated with black/glittery and yellow sprays. And if that wasn’t enough, he’s also got a matching Gobon Blaster attachment (so another decision for me to make).
Okay, I’ll admit this definitely isn’t a review, but it’s hard to be objective about a toy when you already know that you enjoy the base figures and the paint job is so neat.
Closing Thoughts
The fourth run of Glyos System Custom Corps customs released this year, the Hades Pheyden and Cerberus Gobon might be the rarest Custom Corps series so far. About fifty were released, which (I think) is less than the other Custom Corps figure runs. These two figures look great, are completely playable, and are going to be toys that those who come to the Glyos System series next year are gonna regret missing.
These aren’t essential pieces for a Glyos System collection, but hardcore fans of the series and designer toy/custom collectors will want these. I’ve no idea how you could pick up a set since they sold out immediately, but if you just have to get a set of these the best advice I can give is to post a request at the October Toys forum. I don’t know if you’ll have any luck, but it’s worth a try.
Philip Reed loves Matt Walker’s paint work and plans to kidnap Matt one Saturday so that Philip can then steal Matt’s secrets. Absolutely amazing painting skills that Philip should totally control.
I like the colors on these. Cool smokey yellow effect.
