A Peek Inside the Star Wars: Edge of the Empire Roleplaying Game
Yesterday at GenCon Fantasy Flight Games announced — and released the beta rules for — their new Star Wars roleplaying game. Star Wars: Edge of the Empire — official website — is the first of three tabletop roleplaying games set during the original trilogy.
I was lucky enough to grab a copy of the book yesterday, and while I haven’t done more than a casual flip through the book I figured some of you would enjoy a few quick shots of pages inside the book. I do not yet know what to expect, but the quick glance makes me think that the FFG team put a lot of effort into creating a completely new RPG . . . and since my first professional work in the game industry was on West End Games’ Star Wars roleplaying game I’m just more than a little interested to see what FFG has done for their new game.
One very important note is that the game appears to include zero real setting information. Anyone buying this will either need to be familiar with Star Wars or have access to other books for background info I suspect that won’t be a problem for almost anyone interested in the game.
Enjoy the pics!

Interesting–that copy seems to have at least artwork, despite what FFG has said that none will appear in the beta they’re selling for $30. I’ve sort of predetermined that I won’t be going anywhere near it.
I can’t imagine PAYING someone to beta test their game (without setting). And then buying the book a second time (with setting).
They may be local bigshots in my corner of the woods, but this is just wrong on a lot of levels.
@Jay – I have no problem with them charging for the Beta. I figure most people never get a chance to test a game and this option is there for anyone who wants to spend the $30. Anyone who doesn’t want to drop $30 can wait until the full game is released.
I bought a copy at GenCon because I want to get a feel for what FFG has planned for the game. I do wish more of what they learned in WFRP3e had made its way into this game; I love the location cards in WFRP3e. It appears that the WFRP3e movement — abstracted to ranges rather than specific gridded movement — found its way to the game (of a sort) and that’s neat. But I miss those location cards.
